如何成为南传佛教徒

归依佛法僧者，以道智得见四圣谛，
即苦、苦的起因、苦的止息与导向灭苦的八圣道。
诚然，这是平安的归依处，
是最上的归依处。
依此归依处，人们得以解脱一切苦。
——《法句经》190-192

举行三皈依式，条件许可的情况下，最好有至少一位具德比丘或护法长者在场做皈依见证，但可能因为种种条件与时间的限制，这在南传佛教中并不是必须的。一个无法亲近僧团，无缘接近善知识，但诚心要皈依三宝者，可以放置佛像（木雕、纸制等等皆可，甚至是一张电子佛像）于净室，在佛像前长跪合掌，安定身心，礼佛三拜，然后朗读下面的誓词（任意使用一种语言均可）

佛陀教诫他的弟子最少要持受五戒，它们是佛教徒的基本行为准则，它们可以为世间带来美德、安乐、恬静和喜悦、免受今生和来世的损害，它是解脱的根本。
